Louisiana National Guardsmen use Blackhawk helicopters to build a dam to protect the fragile wetlands known locally as 'Bayou' near the town of Grand Isle, as work continues to protect the coastline from oil after the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster off Louisiana, on May 11, 2010. US military Black Hawk helicopters dropped sandbags in the middle of the channel near a barrier island in Louisiana in a desperate bid to keep the huge, growing oil slick at bay. Creating another obstacle in a bid to protect the area's fragile ecosystem -- home to pelicans, gulls and bounties of sea creatures vital to the local fishing economy -- National Guard troops organized the bags in a bid to plug up channels through which oil could seep into the wetlands. Officials have been racing to protect the coast line from the oil gushing from under the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico at rate of 210,000 gallons a day.

A National Guard Blackhawk helicopter flies over the oil slickas it passes through the protective barrier formed by the Chandeleur Islands, as cleanup operations continue for the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster off Louisiana, on May 7, 2010. The Gulf of Mexico oil slick threatens disaster for the fragile US coast, causing clean-up efforts to focus on the best of a bad set of options: fight it there before it arrives here. An army of workers hired by British Petroleum, along with the US Coast Guard and local officials in Louisiana, have rushed to set out protective booms, spread dispersants and burn the oil when they can as it moves toward the shore. The strategy is to deal with the growing slick as much as possible before it laps into wetlands on Louisiana's coast, where its effects could be catastrophic and cleaning it is infinitely more difficult if not impossible.

New Orleans Ritz Carlton hotel staff member Daisye Suduran prepares human hair that has been stuffed into nylon stockings, that will then be placed in the ocean to absorb oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster off the coast of Louisiana, on May 8, 2010. The program run by the Matter of Trust group has set up nine locations across Louisiana to accept the human hair, fur and fur coat donations. Local authorities are attempting to deal with the growing oil slick in as many ways as possible before it laps into wetlands on Louisiana's coast, where its effects could be catastrophic and cleaning it is infinitely more difficult if not impossible.

Oil boom barriers that are expected to stop the spread of oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster, lies washed up on the beach after heavy swells and winds hit the coast of Louisiana on April 30, 2010. A giant oil slick threatened economic and environmental devastation as it closed in on Louisiana's vulnerable coast, prompting the US government to declare a national disaster. Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency and called for urgent help to prevent fragile wetlands and vital fishing communities along the coast from pollution on a massive scale. The wind started to strengthen and blow the 600-square-mile (1,550-square-kilometer) slick directly onto the coast, where a rich variety of wildlife were at risk in the maze of marshes that amounts to 40 percent of the US wetlands.
