Sky+HD box - Help with set up

  • If you're new to Sky+HD you'll want to get started as quickly as possible. Depending on the type of set up and installation you chose when you ordered, you may like to see our guides to self set-up or engineer installation. Once your Sky+HD box is up and running, make sure you can find the programmes you want and that you're watching them in glorious high sky-plus-hd-box-230 definition. Don't forget, there are full manuals in PDF format available under Quick links on the main Sky+HD page.

Remember to disconnect your Sky+HD box from the mains before you connect it to, or disconnect it from, any other equipment.

    • Using Sky Guide

The Sky Guide TV listings for Sky+HD are now better organised and clearer than ever. Our video shows the most important features and how to use them.

    • Microfilters and Splitters

Although only small, Microfilters and Splitters have a big part to play in the correct set up of your Sky set top box and Broadband within your home.

      Microfilters and Splitters
      Key things to remember:

      1. You must connect a Microfilter to every telephone socket you use (Fig. 1)
      2. The Microfilter must be the first thing connected to each telephone socket you use (Fig. 2)
      3. If you need to connect more than one device to a single socket you will need a Splitter. Each Splitter must be connected to a Microfilter and connected into the socket marked PHONE (Fig. 3)
      4. The telephone cable must be connected to the Telephone Line socket on the rear panel of each Sky set top box, this socket may be colour coded orange (Fig. 4). If you have a Sky+HD or SkyHD box, ensure your telephone cable is not connected into your Ethernet socket (colour coded green)
      5. You must connect each Sky set top box, and any other devices that need a phone socket (e.g. phones, alarm systems etc.), to the Microfilter socket marked PHONE
      6. You must connect your Broadband equipment to the socket marked MODEM
      7. If you are using an extension socket, check you only have a Microfilter connected at one end of the extension cable – not at both ends
    • Self set-up

If you've chosen to set up your own Sky+HD box, our easy-to-follow video guide shows you how to get your box connected and start viewing HD content in no time at all.

    • Self set-up in a flat with a communal satellite system

If you live in a block of flats with a communal satellite system (more than one home served by a dish, with slightly different connections to those in a flat with its own dish), you need to follow a slightly different set-up procedure.

    • Is the programme I'm watching in HD?

Some customers who are new to HD may find that a particular programme looks or sounds as though it's in Standard Definition. If you're not sure, please take a look at our guide to finding out whether a programme you are watching is being shown in high definition.

    • Troubleshooting: I'm seeing the 'No satellite signal is being received' message

You can check the strength of your signal using your Sky remote control:

      1. Press services on your Sky remote control and you will see the main menu with Options highlighted.
      2. Highlight the Settings menu using the right arrow button and press select.
      3. Use the left/right arrows to scroll to Signal and press select.
      4. The grey bars displayed will show you the strength of the signal to your Sky+HD box.

        Checking signal strength and quality
      5. If you do not have any signal strength or quality, switch the Sky+HD box and TV to standby, leave for a couple of minutes, then switch any connected items off and unplug from the mains.
      6. Disconnect and then reconnect the cables coming from your satellite to Dish Input 1 and Dish Input 2 (brown sockets) at the back of your box. These are screw connectors; turn clockwise to tighten and anti-clockwise to loosen. Do not bend the copper wire in the middle of the satellite cable and ensure you screw the connection onto the back of the box until it is secured tightly.

Reconnecting your satellite cables to your box
      7. Plug in and switch all products on again and confirm that the signal test screen shows the correct results by following the instructions in steps 1-4 again.
