Cannot view any websites

  • Router lights

    If the internet light (the one with the @ symbol, pictured) is solid green, please have a look at our No Connection article.

    If the green light on your router is flashing, but you can't see any web pages, then you need to check your web browser settings. Your browser settings can sometimes slow down your web browsing and cause your internet connection to keep dropping.

    To check your browser's connection settings, follow the instructions below for the latest versions of the four most common browsers.

    If you don't have the latest version of your browser then we recommend you update it. If you use a different browser then take a look at the Help menu for your browser - it should tell you how you can check your browser's settings.

    • Internet Explorer 9

      1. Open Internet Explorer
      2. Click on the Tools menu and then on Internet Options
      3. Select the Connections tab
      4. Click on the LAN Settings button
      5. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, untick all the boxes in the Automatic configuration and Proxy server sections – none of the boxes must be ticked
      6. Click OK and OK again to close the pop-up boxes
      7. Close and then restart your browser

    • Mozilla Firefox 6

      1. Open Firefox
      2. Click on the Firefox button in the top left of your browser, select the Options menu, then Options
      3. Select the Advanced tab
      4. Click on the Network tab
      5. Click on the Settings button
      6. Select the Use system proxy settings option – only that option should be selected
      7. Click OK and then OK again to close the pop-up boxes
      8. Close and the restart your browser

    • Google Chrome 13

      1. Open Google Chrome
      2. Click on the Tools menu (the spanner) and select Options
      3. Click the Under the Bonnet tab
      4. Click on the Change proxy settings button
      5. In the pop-up box select the Connections tab
      6. Click on the LAN settings button
      7. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, untick all the boxes in the Automatic configuration and Proxy server sections – none of the boxes must be ticked
      8. Click OK and OK again to close the pop-up boxes
      9. Close and then restart your browser

    • Safari 5

      1. Open Safari
      2. Click on the Settings menu (the cog) and then click on Preferences
      3. Select the Advanced tab
      4. Click the Change settings button
      5. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, untick all the boxes in the Automatic configuration and Proxy server sections – none of the boxes must be ticked
      6. Click OK and then on the red cross to close both pop-up boxes
      7. Close and then restart your browser
