Problems Sending Email After Enabling POP With Sky Email

  • If you prefer using another dedicated email program rather than a web-based onel, you can enable your Sky Email to send mail using POP (Post Office Protocol). If you have done this and are now having problems sending email, have a read of our list of common solutions.

If you see a Google confirmation or notification page after saving your changes, don't attempt to log in to Gmail. Close your browser, go to www.sky.com and click the email icon to sign in again. Any changes you’ve made to your account should have been applied.

    • If You Haven't Enabled POP Yet

      • Log into your Sky Email account
      • Select Settings at the top of any Sky Email page
      • Chose Forwarding and POP in the Mail Settings box
      • Select Enable POP For All Mail or Enable POP For Mail That Arrives From Now On
      • Choose the action you'd like your Sky Email messages to take after they are accessed with POP
      • Configure your POP client and Save Changes

If you have done this and are now having problems sending email, have a read of our list of common solutions.

    • Check That POP Is Enabled For Your Sky Email Account

      • Select Settings in the Sky Email toolbar
      • Open the Forwarding and POP tab and select Enable POP for all mail
      • After enabling POP, save changes so Sky Email can communicate with your mail client

You can find a more detailed explanation of the POP enabling process at the top of this page.

    • Enable SSL for The SMTP Server

If your email provider doesn't support SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) you will need to untick the SSL option when configuring your POP client.

    • Allow Authentication for The SMTP Server

Check that Allow Authentication is active for the SMTP server in your mail client. Try looking at the options or settings in your existing email account for information about allowing SMTP authentification.

    • SMTP port settings for Sky Email

To maintain privacy for messages sent from your desktop email program via Sky Email, you must encrypt your outgoing email. To do this change your SMTP port to 465 (for SSL) or 587 (for TLS)* by accessing your Sky account settings in your desktop email program. If you don’t do this you will be able to receive mail, but not be able to send mail. Depending on your computer and its software, sometimes only one of these port numbers will work – for example we recommend TCP port 587 for Apple Mail running on an Apple Mac with OS X Jaguar as its operating system. The older method of sending unencrypted email via Port 25 is not supported by Sky Email.

*'TLS' (Transport Layer Security) and the older 'SSL' (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption protocols provide security for emails and other internet communications.

    • Port 25 for other SMTP mail providers

Sky Broadband allows port 25 traffic so you can send unencrypted email using an older mail service provider if you wish. However, to send messages via Sky Email do not use port 25, instead use the SMTP port settings listed above.

    • Check That You Entered The Correct Username and Password

Misspelling your username or password, or forgetting to include the @sky.com suffix in your username can prevent you from sending emails.

Please note that passwords are case-sensitive.

    • Attachment Limitations

As a security measure to prevent viruses from being spread, Sky email does not allow you to send or receive executable files that could contain harmful code or instructions for your computer. You can only send and receive emails that are smaller than 10MB in size, so if you are sending groups of documents you may need to send them individually. You can also try zipping large files.

Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other email services with smaller attachment limits.
